This exhibition surveys ten contemporary Latin American women artists whose works together represent a blend of current methods and tendencies in the visual arts as well as providing insights into Latin American culture and sensibilities. David Perez-Mac Collum, contemporary art dealer and collector from Guayaquil, Ecuador, recently spoke (12 Nov., 2003) at the ongoing noon-time lecture series for students and faculty in conjunction with the exhibition. I spoke to him after his lecture. Shabaka: You mentioned in your lecture today about the problematics of categories and how they can be used for both positive and negative things. Could you elaborate how you see that? Perez-Mac Collum: We need categories so that we can define things. However, it also has a financial or marketing strategy.
